Multiparity
Summary
The state of having given birth to more than one child (para >1); associated with increased parity-related health risks including uterine atony, postpartum hemorrhage, and certain cancers.
Detail
Multiparity refers to women who have delivered more than one viable infant (para >=2). Multiparity is associated with increased risks of uterine atony, postpartum hemorrhage, and placental abnormalities (particularly para >=4). Protective effects include a small reduction in breast cancer risk. Conversely, multiparity is associated with higher rates of hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and lower bone mineral density. In clinical practice, risk stratification for gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and placental disorders takes parity into account.
